Trip Tips For Traveling With Children

This article will be most helpful during these steps in the Intelligent Travel Process™:  Prepare; Enjoy.

Traveling with children can be a challenge.  However, some of the best and most important experiences a family have are when they are traveling together.  Consequently, families gladly take on the challenge.  Traveling with children is another place the intelligent travel process can be a big help.  The intelligent travel process insists that we do not simply hit the road but that we plan and prepare for it.  So if we are traveling with children, then we need to plan and prepare to travel with children.  In this article you will find some helpful trip tips for traveling with children.  These trip tips are not focused on traveling with baby, but with older children.

Trip Advice For Traveling With Children

Traveling With ChildrenWhen you are planning a vacation that includes traveling with children it is best to sit down with them and explain the rules for the time you will be on vacation.  They may be used to certain freedoms at home that are not practical, acceptable or safe while on vacation.  You should have–and they should know–you have different expectations when traveling.  However, children have little chance of living up to such expectations if they are not aware of them.  You should also set up a buddy system in which each child is paired with adult that is responsible for them.  If you have teens that are old enough and responsible enough to be on their own for certain times and places, the buddy rule (now two teens) is a still a good idea.  Moreover, expectations for these times away from the adults needs to be very clear and very clearly communicated.  The ability to communicate via cell phones makes time away much easier and safer than in the “old” days.

Children are not always the easiest to travel with.  Consequently, you need to plan ahead when traveling with children.  Kids are much happier when they are involved in something or are entertained.  Young children are not going to sit quietly for long periods of time.  In this media age of instant entertainment, even older children and teens are unlikely just to sit.  Make a list in advance of the things that your children like to do and that can easily be accommodated when traveling.   Then you simply bring these entertainments tools along with you.

Family Road Trip Tips

For younger children a portable DVD player and some movies can be great if you are traveling with children by car.  It is also useful in the hotel no matter what your means of transportation.  It can also come in handy if you have a rainy day or just need some down time.

Car trips can be wonderful family time together.  However, long stretches with uninteresting landscape will lead to bored and unhappy kids and, of course, the dreaded question, “Are we there yet?”  Be prepared with family activities that everyone can participate in such as songs or games.  Also include activities that the children can do on their own such as video games, notepads, crayons and colored pencils.

Prepare and bring a clean-up kit with you when traveling with children by car.  You have such supplies at home because you know accidents will happen.  Well, they will happen on the road as well.  In fact road conditions such as potholes may make them more likely.  If you have more than one child then the chances of an accident goes up.  At a minimum, your kit should include trash bags, towels, and wet wipes.  You should also have easy access to changes of clothing when traveling with children by car.

Traveling With Children By Air

Air travel, especially with small children, presents its own challenges.  Flying is actually a pretty stressful experience that can cause them become over-tired (because of not sleeping in anticipation), anxious or cranky.  Again, it is key that you talk to your kids before, during and after so that they know what to expect and what is expected of them.  Do not assume that just because your children haven’t said anything that they have no concerns or issues.  A second key strategy is to distract them while you are traveling.  Purchase a couple of new toys and pack them in your carry-on bag and then bring them out (one at a time) to help keep them entertained and distracted.

Meals on domestic flights are now rare.  However, if it is an international flight or you know they are serving a meal, ask the airline in advance for a child’s meal.  It will not be healthy food but at least your child will actually eat what is on their tray.  Also bring your own snacks for before, during and after the flight.  Things that make your child more comfortable will help them handle the experience better.  Traveling with children by air takes some intelligent travel planning.

Hotel Time When Traveling With Children

When traveling with children much of your time will be busy.  However, you are likely to have some down time at the hotel.  Children find it difficult to entertain themselves when they are not at home with all of their play things.  You need to prepare in advance for such times.  So pack an activity bag with toys, books or other activities that they might do in the hotel.  Taking the time to plan and implement this will increase that likelihood that you actually get to relax during such times.

Self-Care When Traveling With Children

When traveling with children, do not forget to take care of yourself.  This is especially important if you, yourself,  are not the best of travelers.  Do not convince yourself that you will get sick as that only increases the chance that you will.  Worrying about motion sickness only makes it more likely.  Do everything you can to lower your stress level.  Instead of getting uptight or letting stressful situations bother you, try to “roll with the punches” if things go wrong .  Things like flight delays or crying children will happen.  They are not the end of the world and you can get past them.

Affairs In Order

Traveling with children, or without them, is a good time to make sure your affairs at home are in order.  Make sure your will is up to date, that insurance is in order and that a trusted friend or family member has power of attorney for you.  You should have designated guardians for your children in case something happens to you. You should also have a medical advanced directive so your wishes are clear and thus can be carried out if you become incapacitated.  Of course, these are not things we want to think about;  but it is important to do so.  Truth is,  serious accidents are less likely to happen on vacation than when one is at home.  Nevertheless, before a vacation is a great time to review all of these things and make sure they are all in order.  It means that you can travel without worries:  which is certainly what you want to do when on vacation.

Fun Vacations For Water Sports Enthusiasts

Best for the Explore, Select, and Prepare steps in The Intelligent Travel Process™

So, you are a water enthusiast! Nothing sounds better to you than surfing, skiing, jet skiing and sailing. Consequently, when the time comes to plan a vacation, you should  include in or–better yet–center your vacation on water sports.  Specifically, you should explore adventure vacations that will satisfy the water enthusiast in you.  Now is the time to start planning a vacation that will help you escape the everyday demands of life by being on the water. Intelligent travel means planning so that you get exactly what you want.

Water Sports Adventure Vacations

As you plan your vacation, imagine a warm breeze sweeping across a sandy beach as the waves crash ashore.  Either this or a resort by a lake is what a water sports enthusiast wants.  There are, of course, many such places, but below are some places you should consider when taking adventure vacations.

St. Lucia Water Sports

Fun VacationsIf your love of water sports centers on sailing, there is no better place to go than the tropical Island of St. Lucia. Located on the eastern Caribbean bordering on the open Atlantic Ocean, it is a place of dreams.  On the western side of the island, you can sail all the way to Rodney Bay where you will find Pigeon Island National Park.  It has an amazing beach.  There is plenty of nightlife in Castries, the capital of St. Lucia, where you can enjoy fabulous meals and celebrate with spirits as you discuss the day’s sailing and plan tomorrow’s adventure.

Adventure VacationsA great option would be to sail to Soufriere on the west coast and St. Lucia’s original capital.  Here you can view the Pitons which are two large volcano plugs.  Volcano plugs are land forms which are created when magna hardens within a volcano vent.  Over time, the surrounding land erodes away leaving dramatic formations.  You can also visit Soufriere Estate, also known as Diamond Estate, and its botanical gardens, sulphur baths as well as Diamond Falls.  Also do not miss the dark sand beach of Anse Cochan.  It is only easily accessible by boat, but the snorkeling is spectacular.

You might want to spend the night (or several) at Jalousie Plantation Resort which is situated between the two Pitons. You could have a romantic night there under the stars or enjoy the wonderful restaurants as you take in the magnificent views of the Caribbean.

Barbados Fun Vacations

Intelligent TravelAnother great water sports destination is Barbados.  You will want to visit the “Soup Bowl” at Bathsheba whose name comes from the foaming surf found here.  It attracts surfers from all over the world and has been the host of many championships.  The water is warn, the atmosphere friendly, and, despite its fame, the waters are usually uncrowded.  It you are looking for thundering barrels and fast walls then this is the place to come.  Bathsheba is really just a fishing village but especially in November when the surfing is at its prime, surfers gather and championships are held.  You should check into renting local houses and mix with the local people to get the true flavor of Barbados.

Acapulco Adventure Vacations

water sports When it come to water sports if you passion is skiing, then you should head to Acapulco, Mexico and its Ski Paradise.  It is highly rated by experts in the field of water skiing.  But, don’t be put off if you are not an expert; Ski Paradise is for skiers of all levels.  If you are planning a vacation around water skiing this is the place to go.  The accommodations are nice and they have great instructors who will help you improve no matter your current level.  There are plenty of other activities including golf, tennis and sport fishing.  Moreover, there is a great night life and magnificent food.

These are only three possible places to plan a fun vacation focused on water sports.  There are many other places to go for surfing, skiing, jet skiing and sailing.  Obviously there are places on both US coasts and the Gulf of Mexico where you can create an adventure vacation for the water sports enthusiast.  Please use the comment box below to add your suggestions for hot water sports travel destinations.

Tips for Beach Vacations

Beach TipsBest for the Prepare and Book steps in the Intelligent Travel Process™.

So, beach vacations are in your plans!  Most people love spending some time on the beach basking in the sun,  listening to the surf, or enjoying time in or on the water.  Whether your upcoming trip is spent entirely at the beach  or you only have only one or two days at the beach, the following beach tips will help you.  Part of the intelligent travel process is to plan well for your trips.  Beach vacations are no exception.

Save Money on Beach Vacations

You can save money on beach vacations by following this tip when you book your trip.   Beach vacations are like so many trips–one of the large expenses is the cost of your room.  To save on rooms  for beach vacations, think about if you are willing to book a room without an ocean view.  While it’s nice to have the ocean view, it’s not likely that you’ll spend a lot of time looking out your window at the beach.   Instead, you’re more likely to be on the beach itself.  Now, if you are going on a romantic getaway and want to spend time away from the public’s eye, then it might be worth it to get a room with a balcony so you can sit and enjoy the view or it’s a romantic getaway, then the view may well be worth the cost.  But, if you’re going to spend your time mostly on the beach itself, the view may not be worth the expense.  During your intelligent planning process, think through this decision carefully as it can make a significant difference in the cost of beach vacations.

Beach Tips

Beach TipsThe most important beach tip is to prepare ahead of time for the day.  So, before you leave for a sun-filled beach vacation make  sure you pre-pack a beach bag with

  • sunscreen,
  • towels,
  • swimwear,
  • non-perishable foods,
  • and other items you want for your time on the sand.

If you prepare this in advance, you won’t have to waste valuable vacation time finding or pay more higher prices for these items.

When you are on your beach vacation, be careful with your belongings when you are on the beach. Think about what you will actually use you when you are on the beach and only take with you what is necessary.  In addition, take turns staying with your valuables while others walk on the beach or spend time in the water.  If no one can stay with your valuables, be sure to take items such as your camera and wallet  wherever you go. Do not leave your belongings unattended on the sand when you go into the water; it’s too easy for someone to steal your possessions when you are not looking.  It would be much more convenient if you could simply leave things on the sand unattended knowing they would be safe.  However, that is not the case.  Having valuables stolen while on vacation can ruin the whole experience.  So plan well what valuables you take with you to the beach and develop and implement a plan to safeguard anything that you would miss if would disappear.

If you are on a cruise vacation but plan to spend a shore day on the beach, ask that a picnic lunch be prepared for you. There is no need to take time away from your beach time to find a restaurant or worry if you are appropriately dressed. Plus, why pay for lunch when you can get it for free.  It would be one thing if you are trying to experience the local culture, but if your purpose is fun, sun, surf and beach, why bother?  Simply call up room service before you leave the ship and have them prepare sandwiches for your beach party.  Take it in your bag and have fun!

Plan A Vacation With Children

Intelligent Travel Process™ users:  This article will be most helpful during the Explore stage.

Planning a vacation with children is a special task and is well-suite for using the Intelligent Travel Process™.     As you are exploring your options on where to vacation with children, here  are a few locations you can count on to make the younger members of your family happy while your ideal vacation with children come true as well.

Vacation With Children Destinations

Here are five great destinations for vacations with children.  They are sure to please your children which, in turn, will allow the adults to enjoy their vacation time.  As you explore the options for having a vacation with children these are good starting trip ideas.

Walt Disney World Vacation With Children

Vacation With ChildrenThere is probably no place on earth that children (of all ages) would rather visit than Walt Disney World as it truly is “the most magical place on earth.”  Disney World, located in central Florida, is not just a theme park but a destination that can keep your family occupied for a week or more.  There are four separate theme parks–

  • The Magic Kingdom,
  • Disney MGM Studios,
  • Epcot, and
  • Animal Kingdom.

Each park will take at least a full day to visit, and you may want to return to your favorite a second day.  In addition there are two water parks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.  There are many other activities from miniature golf to all types of sports.  Then there is a five story arcade called Disney Quest where you can wander the various floors being entertained all day for a single admission price.

When you vacation at Disney World, you should stay in a Disney resort if all possible.  The perks are significant.  The most obvious is the convenience including free transportation all over Disney World.  Plus, you get extended hours at the parks not open to others and access to special character meals.  Young children especially love eating with Mickey Mouse or Cinderella.   There is also plenty to do for adults.

Most of the rides are fun for adults and there is nightlife, wonderful food and shopping everywhere.  We have also taken nieces and nephews to Disney World and so have experienced how magical it is with children.  It truly is a magical place to vacation  with children.

Please do not think of just showing up at Disney World.  Doing so will make you and the children you are with frustrated.  That’s because you’ll waste time standing in lines and miss out on special opportunities when you vacation with children.  Doc 2 (Joel) recommends a sister site of Pair of Docs Travel (Disney World Guide) for more information and a review about an inexpensive product that will make a great difference when you plan a vacation to Disney World.

NOTE:  Even though we have no children, both Doc1 (Nelia Beth) and Doc2 (Joel) love Disney World.  We went there on our honeymoon and took our (then) teen-aged nephew there some years later.

Atlantis Resort Vacation With Children

Vacation With ChildrenThis resort has everything for the adult including fine dining, spas, nightlife, casino, sports, shopping, etc.  However, this highly-themed resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas (there is also one in the Middle East in Dubai) is a wonderful place to vacation with children.  You may be surprised how kid-friendly Atlantis is and what a good place it is to plan a vacation with children.  First there is Aquaventure, a 141 acre water park that is included free for overnight guests.  In addition, the resort includes massive aquarium exhibits.  There are plenty of opportunities to get close to sea creatures including dolphins, sharks, stingrays, turtles and others–some you can even swim with and/or touch.  You can snorkel, scuba or snuba (a way to scuba without being certified).  There are special summer camps for kids so explore the dates of these before you plan a vacation to Atlantis.  The Cartoon Network also has many special summer activities at Atlantis, so again check the dates.  Your family can play golf or tennis.  You can rock climb.  There is a great game room and a movie theater.  Kids can create their own stuffed animal from scratch.  There are separate kids and teen clubs with all kinds of activities.  There is even a radio controlled car track.  Moreover, there are kid friendly dinning venues.  If you need some time to slow down, there is even a library.  Your family will have a great time at Atlantis as it is a great place to vacation with children.

Snowbird Resort Vacation With Children

Plan A VacationConsidering a winter vacation with children?  Then plan a vacation to Snowbird resort in Utah.  Unlike most winter resorts, Snowbird is very convenient–a mere 30 minutes–to downtown Salt Lake City.  Everything you would expect at a winter resort is there:  skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.  You can even ski at night at Snowbird.  Be sure to ride the aerial tram to the top of a 11,000 foot mountain peak for some amazing views.  There are many room options and a host of dining options.  Do the younger children need some time away from you?  Well then, there is Camp Snowbird for 6-month to twelve-year- olds where they can enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities including arts, crafts and games.  While the kids are off doing their thing, you can spend some time at the spa.

Ski resorts are great spots for a vacation with children in the summer as well.  Obviously, there is no skiing but often there are even more activities.  In addition, oftentimes summer rates can provide for amazing bargains.  I had wonderful summer adventures at Snow Bird and at Snowmass near Aspen, Colorado.  The summer activities at Snowbird are extensive.  Of course the aerial tram is still there.  There is a unique mountain roller coaster.  Some of the chair lifts operate and they can take you to wonderful hikes—mostly downhill!

Snowbird has a zip style ride and an unusual bungee trampoline.  There is also a ropes course and climbing wall.  You can seek your riches by panning for gold.  For the sports minded there is basketball, volleyball, badminton and horseshoes.  Movies and concerts are also part of the summer activities.  Be sure to check the schedule for music and other special events as you plan a vacation to Snowbird.

Need to be on the move?  Hiking, biking, riding scouters and horseback riding are all possibilities.  You are in the great outdoors, so fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing are always a possibility.  Your family can have wonderful fun-filled outdoor (and some indoor) adventures at Snowbird in the summer.  It is a wondeful place to vacation with children in both winter and summer.

Treesort Vacation With Children

TreesortIf you want a truly memorable, Swiss Family Robinson style, adventure vacation with children then you should consider Treesort in Takilima, Oregon.  Yes, you will be staying in the trees.  There are 18 various facilities in the sky—some with full plumbing, some without.  There are plenty of onsite outdoor activities including a series of zip lines, horseback riding, river rafting and arts and crafts.  Be sure to check out their special events as you plan a vacation to Treesort.  Plus there are great wilderness expanses nearby for hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing.  Plus other Oregon and northern California sites could be included into a Treesort vacation with children.

Kingsmill Resort Vacation With Children

Kingsmill Golf Club sign 2002Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia is a high class resort that is surprisingly kid-friendly.  It has a great spa, nice dining options and some good shopping options—both on grounds and in the area. There are three golf courses and tennis is also available.  There is a marina for boating activities and a nice swimming pool.  Your kids and you can take a Segway tour or rent bikes and ride the trails.  There is also hiking and fishing.  In the summer there are also special children’s activities.

Perhaps the best part about Kingsmill is that in addition to all these on-grounds activities, it is a great place to stay while visiting area attractions which include Colonial Williamsburg, Bush Gardens theme park and Water Country USA waterpark.  You can truly have a muti-dimensional vacation with children as Kingsmill.

Hopefully, these five destinations will start your thinking process as you plan a vacation with children.  Please use the comment box below to add destinations and ideas you have for a vacation with children.
